Riley, Bridget

Riley, Bridget
   b. 1931
   Painter
A leading exponent of op art, Bridget Riley gained recognition during the early 1960s with her abstract black and white paintings, whose patterns created visual sensations such as movement or vibrations. In 1965 she achieved international recognition when her work was included in The Responsive Eye exhibition held in New York, and in 1968 she won the International Painting Prize at the Venice Biennale. Towards the end of the 1960s Riley introduced colour to her work, using contrasts which increased the optical effects produced by the image. In the 1980s the artist continued to use the vertical structure which appeared in her stripe paintings, offsetting this with diagonally placed rhomboids to produce a sense of overall rhythm.
